Free webinar: 3 critical questions regional Councils should ask about tourism

Our recent series of articles explored approaches to three key issues that are impacting local governments across regional Australia:

What is the role of local government in a modern and changing tourism industry?

Are we a destination or do we have the ability to become one?

Do we have the capacity, commitment and resources to realise our human potential?

Listen in as Linda Tillman of regional tourism consultancy Tilma Group and Ali Uren of learning and development service Kiikstart discuss these three questions in a short 30-minute webinar.

Key take outs

  • Councils need to consider “Are we a destination?” and what can be gained (or lost) from being a destination.

  • Decision makers need to be thinking ‘inside the box’ – understanding local barriers and constraints.

  • Be mindful of your human resources and their capabilities!

  • Understand the role of Local Government in your visitor economy – this will vary so undertake an audit of who is doing what and know your region’s gaps (This is your Council’s role in tourism).

  • One of the greatest areas of waste is strategic planning – while planning is crucial, it should not be overcomplicated. When preparing a new strategy or Destination Management Plan (DMP) have it focus on activation rather than it being a wish list of projects that becomes so overwhelming nothing is achieved!

  • No more box ticking, training for training's sake, skills development! To efficiently succeed Local Government needs to be entrepreneurial, with training focused on skills to support success now.

  • Be inspired, but not distracted by your neighbours and other regions – understand and be true to your unique selling point (USP) – we don’t get results by trying to be everything to everyone!
